The opportunities raised by Phil Robertson's interview with GQ magazine tell us a great deal about our society. If I were looking for an answer to the question, “What is sin?” neither GQ magazine nor a folksy gentleman from the swamps of Louisiana would be a primary source for my study. Neither would the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation be authoritative for me on the subject of how real Christians think, act, or behave. If anyone wants to know what counts as a sin, all they need to do is read The Book God gave us. If you don't like what you read (and it is offensive to all who don't believe it), take it up with the Author. We will all meet Him someday.
The fact that Phil quoted God's Word accurately and in context is offensive to many people. The Authority is from God, not from A & E or “Duck Dynasty's” popularity or wealth. God calls all people to repent of their sins and trust in Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior–what a radically life-changing message that is (or can be, to all who receive it). The truth from God's Word is that all people need to repent of NOT EMBRACE their sins. The forgiveness Christ won at the cross for everyone may only be received by grace through faith. The type of eternity we spend depends absolutely on God the Holy Spirit's invitation and our response, believe it or not!
Neither your opinion, nor my opinion, nor GLAAD's opinion, nor Phil's opinion, nor GQ's opinion amounts to a swamp of ducklings compared to God's revealed Word. If this national firestorm gives us the opoortunity to discuss the Christ of Christmas Who came to free us from our sins and offer eternal life and salvation, let us boldly give a defense for the hope that is in us!
