In Tom Stoppard's “Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead” in spite of all odds, a fair coin toss keeps coming up with only heads 92 times in a row. When confounded or confused by events, how do Christians decide which alternate route to take? One of my professors in a values clarification class at the University of Wisconsin used to say: “Things are neither right nor wrong, only more or less elegant.” And if that were the case, a coin toss could be all we'd need for a whole host of choices.
However, when considering the range of human behavior, God's Word clearly teaches that His Will and not our opinion is of ultimate importance. When His Word speaks on an issue, knowing what to do is easy for Christians who prayerfully invest their time studying the Bible. Overcoming temptation, inertia, laziness, spiritual shyness, and actually doing it may be the challenge. When the choice isn't spelled out quite so clearly in Holy Scripture, then what?
Even if I weren't a pastor, I'd say: “PRAY for the Holy Spirit's guidance; ask a pastor who lives as if he really believes the Bible is the inspired Word of God; seek out other mature Christians whose judgment and expertise you respect; check out LCMS.org to see if similar questions have already been prayerfully covered and our church's understanding of biblical principles may be applicable to your situation; and ask for God to bless you with enough patience for the gravity of the decision you are making (“Health pellets or Lucky Charms for breakfast?” requires one level of analysis, but “What should my career be?” or “Whom should I marry, if anyone?” demands a greater degree of consideration). Also, since we are members of the Body of Christ, pray for each other as you make major decisions and be as willing to offer the benefit of your wisdom and experience to those who may ask as you are unwilling to proffer unsolicited advice. The God of peace will direct you to peace in your decision-making in His good time.
