After another near miss with the latest fiscal cliff, I really have to ask politicians on all sides, “How productive is this game of governmental chicken in resolving our financial crisis?” Spin doctors on both sides of the aisle have ladled out infinitely more blame than productive solutions. Tiptoeing away from the cliff at the last minute again gives the impression of brinksmanship, belying the seriousness of the massive challenges facing our nation. It implies that we can alway wriggle out of trouble just in the nick of time.
A $17 trillion debt, quantitatively easing ourselves into a devalued currency, Islamist militants attacks on our interests worldwide, immigration reform, and brinksman instead of statesmen in government are troubling enough. However these national and international problems play themselves out, there is a greater personal crisis that each of us must face. What do we do when we fall into the hands of an Almighty, Just, Perfect, Righteous, and Omnipotent God? “The Devil and Daniel Webster,” any number of sly con-men motifes, and the prevailing sentiment that we can McGyver our way out of anything has most people in our culture marching like lemmings up to and over the edge of a real life cliff into eternity, missing the only Savior!
Unlike the debt limit/governmental crisis, none of us know how close we are individually to the eternal cliff that can only be bridged by God's grace in Christ Jesus. God has graciously paid your sin debt in full by punishing Jesus in your place! Don't delay another second. Trust Him for yourself, share Christ with everyone whom you do not want to spend eternity in hell, and avoid procrastinating away your future in eternal brinksmanship.
