I would describe the powerful motion picture “Twelve Years a Slave” as relentlessly horrible. Not that it was a bad film. It was in my opinion very powerful and moving in its overall wrenching depiction of a society wholly corrupted by slavery.
One of the challenging parts of the film for me as a Christian was the depiction of so many “Christian” hypocrites: would I have been a nice slave owner? a mean one? an abolitionist? a carpet-bagger? or an unwitting accomplice buying slave-produced goods without a good-faith effort to investigate the marketplace dynamics?
In a world which still has slavery, for the love of God refuse to do nothing. Ask the Good Lord to show you how to have an impact and free modern-day slaves from the relentlessly horrible conditions of 21st century servitude.
