Of course you have! They're impossible to avoid in some locations, usually clearly marked, and designed to get drivers to slow down. While I've received citations from the State of Illinois for safe (yes, SAFE) driving the last few decades, I don't always creep slowly over speed bumps. I typically eyeball them, estimate the ground-clearance on my vehicle, remaining useful life of my shocks, struts, and tires, and calculate the loss of fuel economy imposed by excessive braking or down-shifting, and the annoyance factor at risking my wheel alignment because other drivers typically drive too fast.
The other day I encountered the mother of all speed bumps and her twin sister. Let me say that after the first bump, I turned into one of those ultra-slow motion drivers (actually slowing to 1/2 the reduced speed) before the next bump.
Sometimes our spiritual lives rattle our undercarriages metaphorically, too. Then we are forced to slow down. There's no avoiding the bump, but does it rattle our faith? Do we use the experience to reconsider what God may be up to or to thank Him for all the smooth paths we have previously enjoyed? Do we thank God for all the warning signs and lights and sirens that His Law typically flashes to prevent many of life's detours and for the Savior, Who shepherds us safely even through the valley of the shadow of death when there is no other way?
The next time you see one of those yellow cautionary road signs, give God a “Thank You” for His warnings and His Word!
